November 10
We came to Milan unexpectedly due to ease of entering Italy by train. The connections were much better to Milan than to Florence so we thought we might as well spend a day here. I'm glad we did, but not for reasons that make me feel particularly good as will be explained. We had a great train trip through the Alps departing Avignon early to go up the Rhone before heading east into the Alps. We ascended the Alps along river valleys to Grenoble which would go on up to Geneva and then turned more southerly to continue ascending to go through a multi-mile tunnel which no doubt made the Continental Divide light work relative to what it required of Hannibal. One side of the tunnel was France; the other, Italy. It was satisfying going up the river valleys that have provided the transgress from the Mediterranian to Northern Europe for centuries. These geographical features explain much about settlements of most towns such as Turin, Lyon, Geneva, Chambeley, Grenoble and, yes, Milan. It was snowing on the northern side and the sun greeted us on the southern to show the beautiful valleys descend into the Piedmont.
